This course is an introduction to basic concepts and methods of plasma physics. It provides basics for further studies of laboratory, fusion, space and astrophysical plasma phenomena. The most important goals of these lectures are to: familiarize the reader with the main concepts and phenomena of plasma physics. Introduction DEFINITION OF PLASMA 1.2 Any ionized gas cannot be called a plasma, of course; there is always some small degree of ionization in any gas. A useful definition is as follows: A plasma is a quasineutral gas of charged and neutral particles which exhibits collective behavior. We must now define “quasineutral” and “collective behavior.”.
